What Is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS) is a nerve compression condition that occurs when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed inside the tarsal tunnel—a narrow space on the inner side of the ankle. This condition is often compared to carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrist but affects the foot and ankle.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome symptoms may include:

  • Tingling, burning, or shooting pain on the sole of the foot or inside of the ankle.
  • Numbness or weakness in the foot.
  • Symptoms may worsen at night or during activity.

A Tinel’s test or nerve conduction velocity study may be used for a diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome, especially when symptoms are persistent or severe.

What Can Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment Help With?

We provide effective care for:

  • Pain, burning, and numbness due to compression of the tibial nerve.
  • Chronic inflammation and swelling around the ankle.
  • Tingling sensations in the arch of the foot, heel, or bottom of the foot.
  • Foot weakness caused by neuropathy of the tibial nerve.
  • Symptoms of TTS that impact walking or daily function.

We customise each treatment plan to address the severity of symptoms and the underlying common causes, including trauma, arthritis, and flat feet.

How Does Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment Work?

We tailor every treatment approach based on your presentation, history, and severity:

Non-Surgical Options

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce inflammation.
  • Custom orthotics to relieve pressure on the tibial nerve.
  • Immobilisation with braces or boots to allow healing.
  • Physical therapy to improve flexibility and strength.
  • Tinel’s test and imaging (MRI or ultrasound) to guide care.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

  • Localised corticosteroid injections to relieve inflammation.
  • Regenerative therapy (PRP or stem cell) to support tissue repair.
  • Ultrasound-guided hydrodissection to reduce compression of the posterior tibial nerve.

Surgical Care

  • Tarsal tunnel release is a procedure to relieve compression of the nerve.
  • Debridement or removal of space-occupying lesions (ganglion cysts, varicose veins).
  • Surgery is considered if conservative treatments fail or in cases of permanent nerve damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Often caused by flat feet, arthritis, injury, or repetitive strain. It results from compression of the tibial nerve inside the tarsal tunnel.

What are the symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome?

Symptoms include tingling, numbness, or burning in the sole of the foot, heel, or arch of the foot. Pain may worsen with standing or walking.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis involves a clinical exam (Tinel’s sign), imaging, and nerve studies. We confirm the diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome using advanced diagnostics.

Can tarsal tunnel syndrome go away on its own?

Mild cases may improve with rest, therapy, and orthotics. However, early treatment is crucial to prevent permanent nerve damage.

When is surgery needed?

Surgery is considered if symptoms persist despite therapy, or in cases of severe nerve compression or tissue damage.
