What Is CryoPen Treatment?

CryoPen is an advanced form of cryotherapy that facilitates the controlled destruction of benign skin lesions through the direct application of extreme cold. The device delivers highly pressurised liquid nitrous oxide with pinpoint accuracy, allowing for rapid freezing of targeted tissue with minimal impact on the surrounding skin.

The mechanism of action involves the formation of intracellular and extracellular ice crystals, which result in cell membrane rupture and irreversible cellular damage. This leads to the selective destruction of the lesion while preserving adjacent healthy tissue. CryoPen’s precision makes it suitable for use on cosmetically sensitive areas, including the face and periorbital region, with a significantly reduced risk of scarring or pigmentary changes.

This method offers a non-invasive, low-downtime alternative to surgical excision, ideal for patients seeking effective treatment for common skin imperfections in a clinical setting.

Consultation

A medical practitioner will assess the lesion(s) to confirm suitability for CryoPen. Only benign, non-cancerous lesions can be treated.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

We recommend avoiding retinoids, exfoliating acids (including AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs), and physical exfoliants for at least 48 hours prior to your treatment. Please refrain from using fake tans or gradual tanning products for two weeks, and avoid laser or IPL treatments during the same time frame before your appointment.

Application

The treatment area is cleansed and prepped. Anaesthesia is typically not required, though topical numbing can be used for sensitive areas. The CryoPen is applied directly to the lesion, delivering a targeted stream of nitrous oxide to freeze the cells. Treatment typically lasts between 5–30 seconds, depending on lesion size.

Aftercare

The treated area may blister or scab before healing naturally. For 48 to 72 hours after your treatment, it’s important to avoid direct sun exposure, heat-based therapies such as sunbeds, saunas, and steam rooms, as well as swimming and hot showers or baths. You’ll receive full aftercare instructions, including advice on protecting the area and avoiding sun exposure during healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between CryoPen therapy and cryosurgery?

While both treatments rely on cryotherapy, the main difference lies in precision and application. CryoPen uses a targeted jet of high-pressure liquid nitrous oxide to freeze tissue with extreme accuracy, making it ideal for cosmetic areas like the face. Traditional cryosurgery typically uses liquid nitrogen and may affect a broader area, increasing the risk of damage to surrounding tissue.

Both methods work by destroying the cell through ice crystal formation that ruptures the cell membrane, but CryoPen offers a more controlled, minimally invasive approach with reduced discomfort and downtime.

Is CryoPen treatment painful?

Most patients feel a mild stinging or cold sensation during the procedure, which quickly subsides. Anaesthesia is rarely needed.

Is there downtime after CryoPen treatment?

Downtime is minimal. The treated area may scab, blister, or develop mild redness, which may last for a few hours to several days, depending on the lesion type and your skin’s sensitivity. Most areas heal completely within a few days to two weeks.

How many sessions will I need?

Most lesions can be effectively treated with just one treatment. However, depending on the size, depth, or type of lesion, a second session may occasionally be recommended to ensure complete removal.

Will it leave a scar?

CryoPen is designed to minimise scarring. Following aftercare instructions carefully reduces the risk of pigmentation changes or marks.

Is it suitable for all skin types?

CryoPen is generally safe for all skin types, though caution is advised for darker skin tones due to the risk of temporary pigment changes. Your practitioner will assess this during your consultation.
