What Is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is a common overuse injury that causes pain on the outside of the knee. It happens when a thick band of tissue—called the iliotibial band—rubs against the lower part of your thigh bone during repeated movements like bending and straightening the knee. This band runs from your hip to just below the knee and plays an important role in keeping your leg stable when you move.

ITB syndrome causes inflammation and pain along the outer knee and can also affect your knee or hip, depending on how the iliotibial band tracks. The movement of the iliotibial band over the bony structures creates repeated stress, leading to irritation and tightness.

The cause of IT band syndrome is typically overuse, poor biomechanics, or a tight iliotibial band. This syndrome happens most commonly in runners, cyclists, and people who engage in repetitive knee movement. The iliotibial band may also abnormally compress nearby tissues, worsening symptoms.

If you’re getting iliotibial band syndrome after increasing your training load or noticing sharp pain on the outside of your knee, it may be time to seek treatment. This syndrome is an overuse injury, but it can become chronic if not properly addressed.

What Can Iliotibial Band Syndrome Treatment Help With?

Our personalised ITBS treatment programme is designed to help most people with iliotibial band syndrome, no matter how long symptoms have been present. Our treatments address:

  • Friction-related iliotibial band impingement syndrome
  • Chronic cases where pain tends to return during activity
  • Secondary conditions like band bursa irritation
  • Limited mobility due to a tight iliotibial band
  • Recurring pain in both  hip and knee regions
  • Long-standing or significant symptoms after 6 months of self-care

We also help identify activities that make your knee pain worse and create a plan to avoid reinjury. Since the iliotibial band that moves during physical activity can be sensitive to repetitive impact, our recovery focuses on long-term correction.

How Does Our Iliotibial Band Syndrome Treatment Work?

Our approach blends evidence-based care with biomechanics and rehabilitation. Here’s how we tailor your recovery:

colors-1

Clinical Assessment

We begin with a detailed evaluation to diagnose iliotibial band syndrome and need to distinguish between iliotibial band syndrome and related knee issues. This may include movement screening, strength testing, and gait analysis.

colors-1

Manual Therapy

We perform soft tissue release around the ilio-tibial band, glutes, and lateral thigh. This reduces friction where the band becomes inflamed and supports better movement of the surrounding tissues.

colors-1

Corrective Exercise

We target muscle imbalances, particularly in the hips, glutes, and quads, to reduce strain. Restoring function in the part of the iliotibial band that stabilises the outer leg can help relieve pressure from the band that moves over the lower femur. Our personalised programme includes strengthening exercises designed to build support around the knee and improve hip stability.

colors-1

Shockwave or Adjunctive Therapies

Chronic band syndrome is often resistant to basic rehab. In these cases, we introduce acoustic wave therapy or dry needling for deep tissue recovery.

colors-1

Education and Prevention

We guide you on biomechanics, footwear, and strength routines to prevent iliotibial band syndrome in the future. For those at risk for iliotibial band syndrome, prehabilitation techniques are also available.

What to Expect During Treatment

When you begin treatment at the Institute of Medical Physics, you’re not just receiving therapy—you’re entering a structured recovery programme for iliotibial band syndrome built around scientific precision.
‍
From day one, we focus on restoring range of motion, eliminating itb pain, and addressing asymmetries in strength or movement.
‍
Recovery from ITB syndrome varies depending on severity. Our clinic offers comprehensive support for fast progress:

  • Weeks of treatment typically range from 3 to 6, with a reassessment every two sessions.
  • Early phases focus on reducing inflammation and pain that causes pain on the outside of the knee.
  • Later phases strengthen the body while supporting your knee and improving overall stability.
  • Your treatment is adjusted based on your goals as well as your current symptoms and activity demands.

We know that band syndrome happens for a reason—our mission is to treat the root cause and equip you with tools to avoid recurrence.

Why Choose the Institute of Medical Physics for IT Band Syndrome Treatment?

As a leading centre in movement recovery, we provide:

  • Deep expertise in overuse injuries like iliotibial band syndrome
  • Access to experienced therapists and advanced rehab technologies
  • Custom plans for every patient, including those with knee is in some way compromised
  • Guidance on how to reduce your chance of getting iliotibial band symptoms again

Our care extends beyond pain relief—we provide strategies to maintain strength and prevent reinjury long after treatment ends.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome Treatment Pricing

At the Institute of Medical Physics, we believe in clear pricing with no hidden costs. We offer tiered packages based on your condition and recovery goals:

  • Initial Assessment + First Treatment: [ ]
  • Individual Follow-Up Sessions: [ ]
  • 3-Session Recovery Package: [ ]
  • 6-Session Rehabilitation Package: [ ]
  • Chronic ITBS Recovery Plan (12 sessions): [ ]

All treatments include expert physiotherapy, diagnostics, and advanced therapies if required. We aim for recovery within 3–6 visits, but you’re supported as long as needed.

About Us

The Institute of Medical Physics is a specialised facility for treating soft-tissue injuries, founded by Dr. Emanuel Paleco. Our clinic brings together advanced rehabilitation, diagnostics, and functional therapy to address conditions like iliotibial band syndrome and patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Whether you’ve had band syndrome diagnosed recently or have still have significant symptoms, we’re here to help. We understand the biomechanics of the iliotibial band that moves during sport and work to reduce pain, restore function, and build long-term resilience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is iliotibial band syndrome preventable?

Yes. With proper warm-ups, strength training, and flexibility work, iliotibial band syndrome is preventable—especially if you’ve had it before or are at risk for iliotibial band syndrome.

How do you diagnose iliotibial band syndrome?

We perform physical tests, screen your movement, and may recommend imaging. In complex cases, we run tests to diagnose iliotibial band syndrome and distinguish it from other knee conditions.

Can I have ITBS and patellofemoral pain syndrome together?

Yes, and they often coexist. This is why we need to distinguish between iliotibial band issues and band syndrome and other possible causes of knee pain to choose the right treatment.

What causes pain on the outside of the knee joint?

A tight iliotibial band, poor running form, or excessive load often leads to iliotibial band syndrome causes. The band moves over the outer thigh bone and may irritate the band bursa, causing inflammation.

What if I have similar symptoms but not ITBS?

We’ll help distinguish between iliotibial band syndrome and other diagnoses to guide you to the right treatment. Our goal is to create different treatment strategies to help each patient.
