Q-switched nanosecond lasers operate at pulse durations of 5 to 10 nanoseconds — fast enough to fragment ink but slow enough that significant heat transfers to surrounding tissue before the pulse ends. This photothermal mechanism produces larger ink fragments and carries higher risk of scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly on darker skin tones. First-generation picosecond lasers improved on this by reducing pulse duration to approximately 450 to 750 picoseconds — fast enough to shift from a primarily photothermal to a primarily photoacoustic mechanism, producing smaller fragments and clearing more efficiently. Phantom-Pico™ operates across four distinct pulse durations — 200ps, 450ps, 600ps, and 750ps — because the optimal interaction with ink changes as removal progresses. Dense fresh ink responds best to the maximum photoacoustic pressure of the Sub-300ps system. Dispersed residual pigment in late-stage removal responds differently — requiring the 750ps architecture to interact effectively with altered ink morphology. No commercial single-platform laser can adapt this way. Phantom™ was built in our San Marino laboratory specifically because it couldn't be purchased.

The three main categories are Q-switched nanosecond lasers, single-platform picosecond lasers, and multi-system arsenals. Q-switched lasers — including the Ruby, Alexandrite, and Nd:YAG variants — were the clinical standard for three decades and remain common at high street clinics. They work, but slowly, and their photothermal mechanism limits how aggressively they can be used without causing tissue damage. Single-platform picosecond lasers — PicoSure, PicoWay, PicoStar — represent a significant improvement in fragmentation efficiency but carry an inherent limitation: a fixed wavelength set and a single pulse duration. A PicoWay, for example, operates at 1064nm and 532nm — effective for black and red ink but unable to target green, teal, or blue pigments at their absorption peaks. Phantom™ is the third category — not a purchased platform but a proprietary multi-system arsenal of eight laser systems covering nine therapeutic wavelengths, developed in our own laboratory. The clinical significance is that the protocol can be adapted at every session based on what the ink is actually doing, rather than repeated unchanged regardless of response.

The question assumes a single answer exists — it doesn't. Every ink colour has a specific optical absorption peak: the wavelength at which it absorbs laser energy most efficiently. Black absorbs broadly across wavelengths, which is why it responds to almost any laser. Green and teal absorb most efficiently at 694nm — a wavelength that most commercial picosecond platforms don't carry, which is why green ink is so frequently described as impossible to remove. Blue pigments absorb at 755nm. Red and orange at 532nm. Yellow and warm tones at 595nm. A clinic with one laser and two wavelengths will clear the colours its device can target and leave everything else. The best approach for complete clearance of a multi-colour tattoo requires matching the right wavelength to each pigment family — and adapting that selection as the ink changes across the course of treatment. At the Institute, that decision is made by a physician at every session, informed by subdermal imaging data, using a nine-wavelength arsenal. It's the physics of light-tissue interaction applied in a clinical setting.
